Dog Bites
Dog bites are a common occurrence because of the large number of dogs in Michigan and the United States in general.  They are so common that state law has been enacted, commonly called the Dog Bite Statute, to deal specifically with the problem.  The law provides that if a dog bites an individual and if that individual was 1) not provoking the dog and 2) legally where they could be, then the owner of the dog is responsible for the injuries.
Often times it is a friend's, neighbor's or family member's dog that has bitten someone that either the dog owner or dog itself is familiar with.  When this occurs there is sometimes concern on the injured individual's part about pursuing a claim, although there should be no concern for the same.
If a dog owner has home owners insurance, then he or she generally has coverage to compensate for the dog bite injuries.  Since insurance is for the purpose of compensating an injured person, the owner of the dog should not hesitate to make a claim.
Further, if a dog owner was aware of their dog's propensity to injure persons then they may be held liable under a separate cause of action.
Mr. Elliott has represented hundred's of individuals that have been injured by dogs, from minor to severe physical injuries and almost without exception it is very difficult to forget the trauma of being bitten.
If you have been injured and would like to discuss the matter or have any questions, pertaining to personal injury law, please call Mr. Elliott at 248-334-1500 or 800-755-2636.
